Comment on Women only spaces – Give and take by Alexandra Allen http://murderofgoths.co.uk/2014/06/08/women-only-spaces-give-and-take/#comment-347 Sat, 17 Oct 2015 01:33:00 +0000 http://murderofgoths.wordpress.com/?p=122#comment-347 I also get a lot of what you are saying in this post. It’s something that I have struggled with myself as a radical feminist. But, I prioritize being trans-inclusive and so that’s how I do organizing when I do it. I think that the major rift between some feminists who exclude transgender people is that they don’t perceive transgender women to be women, which I believe is a more primary reason for why they exclude them. I don’t know if it really is because they are afraid that they will sexually assaulted by people who were assigned male at birth. I mean, it isn’t penises that cause rape. It’s a small percentage of misogynist men. It’s the toxic masculine gender identity that is part of their persona and consciousness that is responsible for sexual violence, not their organs. They could act out sexual assault with anything. Furthermore, if a space is called woman-only, but doesn’t include transgender women, then it’s actually woman-assigned-female-at-birth-only, because it doesn’t include a whole demographic of women who are trans. You know? Again, I do understand where you are coming from and I want cisgender women to feel safe, but I also want transgender women to have that same safety of being among fellow women.

I know that you wrote this over a year ago, but I do know of some important terms that are politically correct to use, if you don’t feel comfortable saying “cisgender” women or “transgender” women. Maybe you’ve already had that question answered, but it’s an important issue to me, so I thought that I would comment. Instead of cisgender, you can say “women assigned female at birth.” It sounds like you were just uncomfortable saying cisgender, but if you also don’t want to use transgeder either, you can say “women who were assigned male at birth.” That way, you are just referencing the social construction of their birth sex/gender, but still acknowledging that both are equally women because they identify with that gender. It helps you to avoid using the word “woman” to refer only to cisgender women, which privileges them within the category woman, while otherizing and marginalizing transgender women as somehow not really women. I hope that that was helpful.

So much this! Thank you for writing such a good response to that comment. I love feminist disability studies and especially the intersection of feminism and mental health. I’ve actually started blogging about it myself over at https://theliteralfeminist.wordpress.com/. I’m glad that I found your blog. I’m enjoying exploring your writing.
